Golf Simulator Space Planning: Minimum Room Dimensions That Actually Work
Share
Stop Measuring Wrong
The number one mistake in golf simulator planning? Measuring room dimensions without accounting for your actual swing. Your driver arc needs clearance. Your launch monitor needs distance. Your screen needs standoff. Here's exactly what works.
Ceiling Height: The Non-Negotiable
Minimum: 8.5 feet (2.6m). Comfortable: 9-10 feet (2.7-3.0m). If you're 6'2" or taller, aim for 10 feet. Test this: take your driver into the room and take a slow, full backswing. If the clubhead clears the ceiling by at least 6 inches, you're good.
Room Width: Single vs. Dual-Handed
For right-hand-only play: 10 feet minimum. For both right and left-handed players without moving equipment: 14+ feet. The screen should be centered on your hitting area, and you need at least 3 feet of clearance on each side for swing follow-through.
Room Depth: The Launch Monitor Dictates Everything
| Launch Monitor | Device-to-Ball | Ball-to-Screen | Total Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| SkyTrak/SkyTrak+ | 0 ft (beside ball) | 8-10 ft | 12-14 ft |
| Garmin R10 | 6-7 ft | 8 ft | 16-18 ft |
| Uneekor Eye Mini | 0 ft (beside) | 8-10 ft | 12-14 ft |
| FlightScope Mevo+ | 7-8 ft | 8 ft | 18-20 ft |
| Foresight GC3/GCQuad | 0 ft (beside) | 8-10 ft | 12-14 ft |
Pro tip: If you're depth-constrained, choose a photometric (camera-based) launch monitor. They sit beside the ball instead of behind it, saving you 6-8 feet of room depth.
Screen Standoff: Don't Skip This
Leave 12-18 inches between your impact screen and the wall behind it. This gap lets the screen flex and absorb impact energy — without it, balls bounce back dangerously. For retractable screens, the standoff is built into the mounting bracket design.
The Golden Rule
Measure twice, buy once. Before purchasing any equipment, mark your hitting position on the floor with tape, take practice swings, and verify clearance in all directions. Your simulator should feel spacious, not cramped.
